Meet Dapper Dan.  He's cute, isn't he?  He's a 10 year old appaloosa gelding.  You can see he doesn't have any appy characteristics, but that's okay.

I tried him out and it looks like he might be my new buddy.

He's a big thick dude with a nice short back who loves to mess with stuff.

He's not a finished horse but I'm excited about working with him and getting him ready to hit the trails.  He does have some experience - about 20 rides on trails around here, and some riding in a more populated area back East.  It will be more an exercise in learning to trust and communicate with each other, I think.   He's a bit spooky, a little willful, and he has some definite opinions about bits.  Luckily he likes a Myler, and I have one for him.  I think he might eventually like Tonka's bit as well, but he'll have to earn that honor.  :)  He's only been ridden in a treeless saddle, so it'll be interesting to see how he does with a big ranch saddle.  He's also only had one rider and one owner since birth, so this will be weird for him.  But I think he might be the type who will enjoy an adventure and things to do.  He's a friendly, inquisitive, smart guy.

I think he and Scout will have a lot of fun playing together.  I wonder what Bella will think of him?

I probably won't have an update until next week, but he might be here by then!  So exciting!

  2. Might be a good horse for horse agility. I have read all sorts of comments from folks improving their communication and relationships with their horses after participating in horse agility. Folks wrote in Jan 1 to thank the founders of horse agility and say what huge changes they had experienced with their training and their horses.

Like the look of him - I like a heavier built horse with good bone and feet. Very exciting - can't wait to hear more!

  7. One of the best horses my family ever had was a bay appy-bred. I hope Dapper Dan is as good for you as that good mare! He is a lovely strong looking boy. Very nice!
