Second opinion
My first second opinion from a vet is that I should euthanize him. I'm still waiting for another call back, and keeping him on Bute and rest. No improvement yet. But he's so incredibly cute, staring at me all the time and whinnying. He's bored. He has Bella for company, but she's not super entertaining.

I have a friend who had a draft horse who had a fractured coffin bone, she was told to euthanize him. Instead, she turned him out on pasture for a year and the horse healed fully. Ramsey is sound with a third of his coffin bone gone. Granted, he is not a riding horse, but my mare is. She had two fractured vertebrae and I was told to put her down as well. I bought a donkey and gave her 18 months off instead. We had a nice ride a few days ago. I don't know what the right thing is for you and Luc, just a few things to think about. I know you will do what is right for both of you. I'm sorry you are going through this and my thoughts are with you.
It sucks. I was thinking paddock rest might do the trick but of course that's pretty much all he's had in his life. I'm not a big one for stall rest type arrangements. Too much else can go wrong, like stifle support getting weak from no exercise and they go potty too. I'm more of a bung them out and see what happens person. :) Having said, that, a bowed tendon or something else acute would be different but I never had one of those to deal with.
I had the vet scheduled to euthanize and the disposal service ready to pick him up hours before I changed my mind and tried conservative TX/rest for Cowboy. You know the happy ending to that story. I would consult with a farrier who can read and understand x-rays. On the other hand, it's your decision to make and I know you'll do what's best for the situation. Sometimes you do have to make hard choices. Sorry this has fallen on you, Andrea. It sucks.
